CBD oil is undoubtedly the rising star of the natural health and wellbeing industry. Sales have rocketed and demand shows no signs of slowing. But what is CBD oil exactly and what are its positive health benefits?
WHAT IS CBD OIL?
CBD (cannabidiol) oil is derived from cannabis. It’s one of over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant and has been used worldwide for thousands of years to treat illness and pain. Cannabinoids interact with our body’s endocannabinoid system in ways that can result in positive health outcomes.
Until recently medical research into these benefits has been limited due to cannabis use being illegal – because it could get you high.
But we now know that THC is the only psychoactive cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant – and CBD does NOT get you high.
CBD was recently legalised - in 2016 - and underwent an image makeover from harmful to healthy almost overnight – now it’s even available on medical prescription in the UK to treat epilepsy.
But most people are buying CBD oil from various other sources and to relieve many more different symptoms and conditions, so let’s talk about 5 other potential benefits of CBD oil.
CBD OIL BENEFITS
Research has found that CBD oil could help with different types of pain because of its ability to affect the brain’s receptors. Studies are ongoing into its potential to treat the symptoms of arthritic pain, chronic pain, muscle pain, MS pain and spinal cord injuries. It’s not yet confirmed whether this is partly due to CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects. Studies have found that CBD has both anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects, which is good news as chronic inflammation is thought to lead to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, early aging and some forms of disability.
ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION
Through its ability to activate 5-HT1A neuro-receptors, a type of serotonin or “happiness” receptor, CBD has been found to potentially treat these conditions without the side-effects associated with traditional pharmaceutical medicines - and with no risk of addiction.
Studies have found that CBD oil can potentially alleviate symptoms of cancer - and the side effects of the chemotherapy drugs used to treat it.
Because of its ability to work with the endocannabinoid system, research has shown that CBD oil could benefit a whole host of medical conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, and traumatic brain injury, to name but a few.
Studies have shown that CBD could benefit the heart and circulatory system by reducing both high blood pressure and oxidative stress, which causes heart damage.
But there are also many other potential benefits of CBD OIL, with countless studies underway.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO):
“In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…To date, there is no evidence of public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”
However, it’s good to be aware that some studies have found potential side effects such as diarrhoea, appetite and weight changes, fatigue. CBD oil also could interact with any other medications you are taking so it’s always best to check with your doctor before using it.
But because it doesn’t contain THC, CBD is generally considered to be a safe and natural way to relieve a wide range of symptoms.
